What Masters of the Universe taught me about Bald Eagles

I just found out, via Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin, that bald eagles like to live in coastal areas. Living by the water allows them to fish for and hunt food more efficiently. This totally makes sense sense to me because they virtually extinct and probably need not to stress about the basics like eating when they need to. Similar to how old people retire to Palm Springs when they discover real life will kill them. Anyway …

Watching Saturday morning television has a much different side effect on me as an adult. When I was a kid, I just had to worry that Masters of the Universe was subliminally telling me to worship satan. I believed this because my parents were briefly involved in the 80s evangelical movement. This problem had a simple solution; Turn the channel when the music starts and throw out all of my Masters of the Universe toys. These simple steps kept me for turning to the under-world.

As an adult, what I learn from watching Saturday morning TV: All of those American Bald Eagles I saw growing up in Bakersfield, CA were, in fact, NOT American Bald Eagles. They would have never been able to live in the dehydrated, toxic, atmosphere of the central valley.

Bald eagle habitat is Science. Masters of the Universe was NOT science.

Moral of the story: I was encouraged to believe deeply in theological myth, yet never corrected when I preached the awe of seeing the endangers American Bald Eagle fly over my house in Bakersfield, CA.
